Mauritius qualified for the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, the country's only appearance at the senior continental finals. The eight-team tournament used two groups of four. Mauritius faced Congo, Guinea and eventual champions Zaire and lost all three matches.

The 2026 World Cup cycle showed that Mauritius can stay in matches

Mauritius' 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign included a 0-0 draw with Angola in November 2023 and a 2-1 win over Eswatini in June 2024. The victory was especially useful evidence: Mauritius recovered from falling behind and scored twice, proving they could solve a competitive match rather than merely protect a point.

The later phase was harder. Cape Verde won 2-0 in Mauritius, Angola won 3-1, and Cameroon won 2-0 before Mauritius finished with a goalless draw against Libya.
