Madagascar no longer have only one football miracle. The Barea topped their group and reached the quarter-finals on their Africa Cup of Nations debut in 2019. A home-based squad then finished third at CHAN-2022 and went one step further at the CHAN-2024 edition played in August 2025, reaching Madagascar's first CAF senior final before losing 3-2 to Morocco. Those achievements belong to different competitions—AFCON is open to the senior national pool, while CHAN is reserved for players active in domestic leagues—but together they show a repeatable national strength: organised, technically brave teams that can outperform their reputation. The missing step is to turn a deep run into a title and to return regularly to the main AFCON stage.

World Cup 2026 status

Madagascar pushed Ghana deep into the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and finished second in Group I. A 4-1 final-day defeat by Mali left the Barea outside the four best runners-up—Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon—so Madagascar did not reach the African play-off and remain without a World Cup finals appearance.

AFCON 2019 changed Madagascar's football ceiling

Madagascar arrived in Egypt as an AFCON debutant and immediately refused the role of ceremonial outsider. The Barea drew 2-2 with Guinea, beat Burundi 1-0 and then defeated Nigeria 2-0 to finish top of Group B. It was not a route built on a single upset: seven points from three matches put Madagascar above one of Africa's traditional powers.

The round of 16 produced an even stronger test. Madagascar and DR Congo drew 2-2 after extra time before the Barea won the shoot-out 4-2. Tunisia ended the run with a 3-0 quarter-final victory, but by then Madagascar had already recorded a first finals appearance, a group win and a knockout success in the same tournament.

The important distinction is that Madagascar did not win AFCON and did not reach the semi-finals. Their best result in the main continental championship remains the 2019 quarter-final. What the run created was a benchmark: the senior team had proved that it could combine compact organisation with enough composure on the ball to beat established opponents.

Two CHAN campaigns turned the breakthrough into a pattern

CHAN measures a different part of a country's football system because only players based in the domestic league are eligible. Madagascar made its tournament debut at the 2022 edition, played in Algeria in early 2023, and finished third. Jean Razafindrakoto scored in the 90th minute to beat Niger 1-0 in the bronze-medal match.

The next edition, officially CHAN-2024 but staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in August 2025, produced an even deeper run. Madagascar survived the group, eliminated co-host Kenya on penalties in the quarter-final and beat Sudan 1-0 after extra time in the semi-final. Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute.

Morocco won a dramatic final 3-2 in Nairobi. Madagascar twice found the net and pushed the eventual champions to the final whistle, but Oussama Lamlaoui's two goals—including the long-range winner—settled the contest. The silver medal did not end the trophy drought. It did make the Barea the first island nation and the thirteenth country to reach a CAF senior final, according to CAF.

The senior and domestic pathways now have to reinforce each other

The 2019 AFCON side drew strength from a mixed player pool. Experienced figures such as captain Faneva Andriatsima, Paulin Voavy and Lalaina Nomenjanahary were joined by players developed abroad, including Jérémy Morel, Romain Métanire and Thomas Fontaine. The blend gave Madagascar technical quality without removing the collective identity that made the team difficult to play through.

The CHAN runs showed the other side of the pathway. Domestic-league players reached a semi-final and then a final across consecutive appearances. That suggests local coaching can produce tournament-ready organisation and players capable of handling knockout pressure. The next opportunity is to move more of those performers into a stable senior pool rather than treating CHAN and AFCON as separate stories.

Madagascar's strongest football is proactive enough to threaten but disciplined enough to protect the centre. The danger appears when the press is broken or the team chases the match with too many players ahead of the ball. The 4-1 loss to Mali on the final day of 2026 World Cup qualifying was a reminder that ambition needs rest defence and game management.

AFCON and CHAN should not be merged in historical summaries. Both are senior CAF competitions, but CHAN squads are restricted to footballers playing in their national domestic leagues. Madagascar's AFCON quarter-final and CHAN silver therefore describe two complementary achievements, not the same team repeating the same tournament result.

The 2027 route continues after the opening window

Madagascar lost 1-2 away to Nigeria on 25 September, then drew 1-1 with Tanzania on 29 September. The Barea return to AFCON 2027 qualifying in the November window, when they are scheduled to face Guinea-Bissau. Because Tanzania qualify automatically as a co-host, Madagascar must finish above Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau to earn the additional finals place. CAF — Matchdays 1–2 results and fixtures.

The group has an important rule. Tanzania qualify automatically as a co-host, so only the highest-ranked team outside the host earns the additional finals place from Group L. In practice, Madagascar are competing directly with Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau for one ticket, regardless of where automatically qualified Tanzania finish.

That format increases the value of head-to-head points. Madagascar cannot rely on being a comfortable second behind Nigeria if Tanzania occupy another position in the table; the Barea must finish above both non-host rivals. The opening defeat in Nigeria and draw with Tanzania left Madagascar with one point from two matches. The November meetings with Guinea-Bissau are the next test of whether the Barea can recover in the non-host qualification race.

The tactical route is clear: preserve the fearless transitions of 2019, integrate the best domestic performers from the CHAN final and control risk when the match becomes stretched. A second AFCON appearance would confirm that 2019 was the start of a football identity. A first title remains the larger destination.
