Malawi's strongest Africa Cup of Nations story is compact enough to remember match by match. At the 2021 edition, played in Cameroon in January 2022, the Flames recovered from an opening defeat, beat Zimbabwe 2-1 through a Gabadinho Mhango brace and held eventual champions Senegal 0-0. That four-point return carried Malawi into the round of 16 for the first time. Mhango then scored one of the tournament's most memorable goals to put the Flames ahead against Morocco, before Youssef En-Nesyri and Achraf Hakimi completed a 2-1 comeback. Malawi did not win a trophy, but the campaign replaced survival with a clear benchmark: qualification, a group-stage win and competitive knockout football.

World Cup 2026 status

Malawi recorded notable wins during the 2026 World Cup campaign, including a 2-1 away victory over Namibia, but finished outside the qualifying places in Group H. Tunisia won the group unbeaten and without conceding; Malawi's final match was a 1-0 loss away to São Tomé and Príncipe. The Flames remain without a World Cup finals appearance.

Four group points changed Malawi's AFCON history

Malawi began AFCON 2021 with a 1-0 defeat by Guinea, so the second match against Zimbabwe already carried elimination pressure. The Flames responded. Mhango scored twice in a 2-1 win, becoming the first Malawi player to register an AFCON brace. It was only the country's second victory at the finals after the 3-0 win over Algeria in 2010.

The final group match was a tactical test against Senegal. Malawi defended with concentration, threatened through Mhango and finished with a 0-0 draw against the team that would eventually win the tournament. Four points were enough to advance as one of the best third-placed teams, taking the Flames beyond the AFCON group stage for the first time.

The route matters because it was not built on reckless attacking. Malawi scored twice across three group games and conceded only twice. Their margin came from game control: recover from the opening loss, win the direct regional contest and protect a point against the strongest opponent.

The Algeria win was the earlier warning that Malawi could upset a favourite

Before the 2021 breakthrough, Malawi had appeared at AFCON twice. Their 1984 campaign began with a 3-0 defeat by Algeria on 5 March, followed by a 2-2 draw with Nigeria and a 1-0 loss to Ghana. The Nigeria draw was not the opening match. The Flames returned in Angola in 2010 and opened with an extraordinary 3-0 victory over Algeria.

That result remains one of Malawi's most famous wins, but it did not lead to the knockout stage. Defeats by hosts Angola and Mali left the Flames bottom of the group. The contrast with 2021 is instructive: an upset can define a memory, while progression requires points across three different game states.

The 2021 side succeeded because it added a result after the headline victory. Holding Senegal meant the Zimbabwe win became part of a qualifying total rather than an isolated high. For a team with limited margin, that is the difference between a famous afternoon and a tournament breakthrough.

Mhango supplied the goals, but the breakthrough belonged to the structure

Mhango was the central attacking figure. His brace against Zimbabwe put Malawi back into the group and his seventh-minute strike against Morocco gave the round of 16 a genuine upset narrative. CAF's match report records the finish from outside the penalty area, curled beyond Yassine Bounou into the top corner.

Morocco's response also exposed the cost of defending too deeply for too long. En-Nesyri equalised in first-half stoppage time and Hakimi's direct free-kick made it 2-1 after seventy minutes. Malawi had created the first shock but could not keep enough possession or field position to relieve the pressure.

The sustainable lesson is therefore broader than finding another finisher. The Flames need a compact block, midfielders able to secure the first pass after a regain and runners close enough to turn Mhango-style moments into repeated attacks. When those distances stretch, the forward becomes isolated and the defence faces wave after wave.

The tournament year and playing date need to be kept separate. CAF calls the competition AFCON 2021, but it was staged in Cameroon from January to February 2022. Malawi's knockout appearance therefore belongs to the 2021 edition even though the Morocco match was played on 25 January 2022.

Three points from the opening window; Egypt next

Malawi beat South Sudan 2-1 at home on 25 September, then lost 3-1 away to Angola on 6 October. The Flames have three points from two Group B matches; Egypt and Angola have four each. CAF lists home-and-away matches against Egypt in the November window. CAF — Matchdays 1–2 results and fixtures.

Unlike groups containing a 2027 co-host, Group B sends its top two teams directly to the finals. That gives Malawi a conventional six-match route. The South Sudan win secured three points, but the Angola defeat means those points must now be reinforced against Egypt; the opening two results are completed evidence, not a future scenario.

The 2026 World Cup qualifiers showed both sides of the Flames. Malawi won 2-1 away to Namibia and came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Liberia, evidence of attacking resilience. Yet a final-day 1-0 defeat by São Tomé and Príncipe reinforced the problem of consistency. Results against comparable opponents must become the foundation, not the exception.

AFCON 2021 provides the blueprint: win the direct contest, protect points against a favourite and arrive at the final match with a route still open. Reaching the 2027 finals would be Malawi's fourth appearance. Returning to the knockout stage would show that the first run was a platform rather than a peak.
