Mauritania reached the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 2019, returned in 2021 and then changed the scale of the story at the 2023 edition, played in January 2024. Yali Dellahi's goal beat former champions Algeria 1-0, delivered the country's first AFCON victory and carried Les Mourabitounes into the round of 16. Cape Verde ended that run with a late penalty, but qualification was no longer the only achievement available to Mauritania. The next cycle has been less smooth: the team missed AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup, yet now has a direct route back through an AFCON 2027 qualifying group with Burkina Faso, Benin and the Central African Republic.

World Cup 2026 status

Mauritania's hopes ended in September 2025 even though they beat Togo 2-0. A 4-0 defeat away to Senegal closed the campaign on 14 October, while Senegal won Group B and DR Congo finished second. Mauritania remain without a FIFA World Cup finals appearance.

Three consecutive AFCON appearances changed expectations

Mauritania's first AFCON qualification was a national breakthrough. The 2019 finals in Egypt ended without a win, but a goalless draw with Angola provided the country's first tournament point. Mauritania qualified again for the 2021 edition in Cameroon and then secured a third consecutive appearance at Côte d'Ivoire 2023.

Repeated qualification matters more than a single surprise. It creates players who understand tournament travel, recovery and pressure, while supporters stop treating the finals as a distant event. CAF described the 2023 appearance as Mauritania's third in succession after group-stage exits in the previous two.

The sequence ended when Mauritania finished third in their AFCON 2025 qualifying group with seven points, one behind Botswana. It was the first finals they had missed since the 2019 debut. The useful lesson is that the programme has crossed one threshold but has not yet made qualification automatic.

The Algeria victory turned participation into belief

On 23 January 2024 in Bouaké, Mauritania faced an Algeria side that had won AFCON in 2019. Dellahi reacted to a deflected shot and scored in the 37th minute. Goalkeeper Babacar Niasse and a compact defence protected the lead, and the 1-0 result became Mauritania's first victory in nine AFCON finals matches.

The result did two jobs at once. It eliminated Algeria and sent Mauritania into the knockout stage for the first time as one of the best third-placed teams. That distinction is important: the achievement was not a ceremonial win after elimination but a result that changed the team's route through the tournament.

Cape Verde won the round-of-16 match 1-0 through Ryan Mendes' late penalty. Mauritania did not register a shot on target, evidence that resilience alone cannot carry a team indefinitely. The best future version of Les Mourabitounes keeps the defensive concentration shown against Algeria but adds more controlled possession and a reliable outlet after regaining the ball.

Dellahi, Niasse and Aly Abeid show the value of defined roles

Mauritania's breakthrough was collective, but its key moments came from players executing clear jobs. Dellahi attacked the second ball against Algeria. Niasse protected the penalty area. Captain Aly Abeid supplied leadership from defence and later scored a fine long-range goal in the 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Togo.

That Togo result in September 2025 showed the attacking template Mauritania can reproduce. Papa Ndiaga Yade used strength and direct running for the opening goal; Abeid stepped forward to finish the second. The problem was timing: victories for Senegal and DR Congo on the same matchday meant Mauritania could no longer finish in the top two.

A smaller player pool makes clarity essential. The centre-forward must offer an escape pass, wide players must arrive quickly enough to prevent isolation, and midfielders must know who attacks the second ball. When those distances stretch, the team becomes passive; when they remain connected, Mauritania can turn a defensive match into a contest decided by one or two moments.

The senior AFCON record must not be confused with CHAN, the separate African Nations Championship restricted to players active in domestic leagues. Mauritania reached a CHAN quarter-final in the 2022 edition, but the country's best senior AFCON finish remains the round of 16.

Three points from two qualifiers; November next

Mauritania opened AFCON 2027 qualifying with a 3-1 win over the Central African Republic on 24 September, then lost 1-2 away to Benin on 29 September. Their next group window is in November, with Burkina Faso among the upcoming opponents. The top two teams in Group F qualify for the finals in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. CAF — Matchdays 1–2 results and fixtures.

The completed home opener delivered the required result: Mauritania beat Central African Republic 3-1. That win provided three points, but the subsequent defeat in Benin showed that control must travel with the team. Pressing, transition protection and effective set pieces remain priorities for the remaining matches.

The opening window ended with three points, not the hypothetical four-point start previously discussed here. Burkina Faso are next in November. Mauritania must preserve enough attacking threat away from home while keeping the defensive concentration that supported the Central African Republic win.

Qualification would restore the sequence broken in 2025. Progress beyond that requires a second knockout appearance, a first AFCON quarter-final and, eventually, a World Cup campaign that remains alive into the final matchdays. The Algeria night proved the ceiling can move. The next task is making that level repeatable.
