Zimbabwe have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations six times — 2004, 2006, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2025 — but every appearance has ended in the group stage. The 2025 tournament followed the familiar pattern in a particularly narrow form: a late defeat by Egypt, a draw with Angola and a one-goal loss to South Africa. The Warriors scored in every match and still finished bottom of Group B with one point. Qualification is no longer the only meaningful target. Zimbabwe need the complete three-match campaign that has always been missing.

World Cup 2026 status

Zimbabwe drew five and lost five in the 2026 World Cup qualifying group. A 0-0 draw with South Africa on Matchday 9 was followed by a 1-0 loss to Lesotho, leaving the Warriors bottom of Group C.

Six appearances have created experience, but not progression

Zimbabwe debuted at AFCON in 2004 and returned two years later. Further qualifications in 2017, 2019 and 2021 established the Warriors as recurring participants rather than a one-tournament curiosity. The 2025 finals became appearance number six.

Yet the ceiling has remained unchanged. Zimbabwe have never advanced beyond the group stage. Individual wins and goals have provided memorable moments, but no campaign has combined enough points across all three matches.

The pattern is informative. At tournament level, an energetic opening or one strong attacking performance cannot compensate for repeated defensive errors, poor restarts or a late concession. Progress requires a squad capable of managing three different match states in little more than a week.

Three competitive performances produced only one point in 2025

Zimbabwe led Egypt through Prince Dube in their opening Group B match. Omar Marmoush equalised before Mohamed Salah scored a late winner, giving Egypt a 2-1 victory.

The Warriors then drew 1-1 with Angola. Gelson Dala put Angola ahead and Knowledge Musona levelled in first-half stoppage time. That point kept Zimbabwe alive before the final match.

South Africa won the decisive Southern African derby 3-2. Zimbabwe twice found a response — first through Tawanda Maswanhise and later through an own goal — but Oswin Appollis converted the late penalty that decided the match.

Zimbabwe finished fourth with one point, behind Egypt on seven, South Africa on six and Angola on two. Scoring in all three games showed attacking resistance; conceding late against Egypt and South Africa showed why the first knockout place remained out of reach.

A winless World Cup campaign exposed the same finishing problem

The 2026 World Cup qualifying group included South Africa, Nigeria, Benin, Rwanda and Lesotho. Zimbabwe drew five matches and lost five, scoring too little to turn competitive positions into victories.

The final window captured the wider campaign. A disciplined 0-0 draw frustrated South Africa on 10 October 2025, but Zimbabwe then lost 1-0 to Lesotho three days later. They finished sixth with five points while South Africa won the group and qualified.

There were credible draws against stronger opponents, including Nigeria and South Africa, but no win across ten matches. For a team aiming to escape an AFCON group, that is the central concern: draws preserve hope, while victories create qualification.

The next cycle needs more reliable chance creation around the penalty area and better support for the striker. Defensive organisation can keep the Warriors competitive; it cannot by itself move them up a table.

Zimbabwe have also won regional silverware: COSAFA records six men's COSAFA Cup titles through 2018. Those honours are separate from the World Cup and AFCON titles tracked here. Zimbabwe's drought is therefore not a lack of access to AFCON. The Warriors have repeatedly reached the finals; the missing step is converting participation into a place among the last 16.

The 2027 qualifiers move on to Equatorial Guinea

Zimbabwe were drawn in AFCON 2027 qualifying Group E with DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone. The top two teams qualify because the group does not contain one of the three tournament co-hosts.

Zimbabwe opened AFCON 2027 qualifying with a 3-2 win away to Sierra Leone on 24 September, then lost 1-2 at home to DR Congo on 28 September. Zimbabwe have three points, with Equatorial Guinea next in the November qualifying window. CAF — Matchdays 1–2 results and November fixtures.

The opening away win supplied three points, but the defeat by DR Congo showed why one result is not a qualification platform on its own. The next test against Equatorial Guinea calls for better penalty-area protection and enough attacking support to prevent long spells without an outlet.

Six previous AFCON appearances have given Zimbabwe a clear benchmark. Qualifying again would be valuable, but the 2027 project should be built around arriving with a stable defensive structure, more than one route to goal and a squad ready to win the match that decides a knockout place.
