Comoros created one of the great stories of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations edition, played in January 2022. On debut, the Coelacanths beat Ghana 3-2 and reached the round of 16, where an outfield player had to start in goal against hosts Cameroon. The trophy is still missing, but Comoros have already shown that a small island nation can shake African football.

A debut knockout team still waiting for gold
Comoros have never won the Africa Cup of Nations and have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. Their best result is reaching the round of 16 at AFCON 2021 on their first appearance.
The achievement was extraordinary because Comoros had only recently become a competitive force in African qualifying. The national team arrived in Cameroon with little tournament experience and left with a new identity.
The 2021 edition, played in 2022: the Ghana shock
Comoros lost their opening two group matches, but they beat Ghana 3-2 in the final group game to qualify for the knockout stage. Ahmed Mogni scored twice, while Youssouf M'Changama helped drive the team forward.
In the round of 16, Comoros faced hosts Cameroon with no recognised goalkeeper available, so defender Chaker Alhadhur started in goal. Captain Jimmy Abdou was sent off early, yet Comoros kept the match close before losing 2-1. The extraordinary performance completed a historic debut.
Comoros' major tournament profile
The diaspora turns an island into a team
Comoros' national team is strengthened by players of Comorian heritage who develop in France and other European leagues. That diaspora gives the Coelacanths a much wider talent pool than the islands alone could provide.
The 2021 team combined that professional experience with a fierce collective identity. Players were willing to defend for long periods, take risks when chances appeared and fight through adversity together.
Why the fairytale must become a programme
A single historic tournament can change expectations, but repeating it requires infrastructure. Comoros need regular preparation, player availability and a domestic pathway that can produce the next generation.
The 2021 round-of-16 run should be a foundation rather than a final memory. Comoros already returned at the 2025 edition. They finished third in Group A with two points and no goals, exiting after a 0-0 draw with Mali on 29 December 2025.

What would be Comoros' first AFCON title?
Comoros have made two AFCON appearances, at the 2021 and 2025 editions. The next goal is a third qualification and another knockout run, not a second appearance that has already happened.
The Coelacanths have already proved they can beat a major African nation and survive knockout pressure. The next step is adding depth so that injuries and suspensions do not change the team's level completely.
Comoros have the story of a fairytale. A first title would turn that story into a tradition.
