Malaysia's Tigers have a proud Southeast Asian football history and regional championship success. The team has never won the AFC Asian Cup or reached the World Cup, making continental progress the next ambition.
World Cup 2026 status
Malaysia entered the AFC qualifying route for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but did not reach the finals. The team is still waiting for its first World Cup appearance.

Regional trophies are not the same as the Asian Cup
Malaysia have won the AFF Championship, but that regional title is separate from the AFC Asian Cup tracked in the main ranking. The Tigers have appeared at four Asian Cups — 1976, 1980, 2007 and 2023 — yet have not advanced to the knockout stage.
Malaysia's tournament profile

The Tigers are trying to rebuild their Asian level
Malaysia's strongest periods came when domestic football and the national team shared a clear identity. Their only Asian Cup finals victory remains the 2-0 win over the United Arab Emirates in 1980. At the 2023 edition, played in January 2024, Malaysia ended with an energetic 3-3 draw against Korea Republic on 25 January but still exited in the group stage.
The modern challenge is to create better youth development, more professional depth and a squad capable of competing beyond Southeast Asia.

|---|---|---|

The next step
Malaysia did not qualify for Asian Cup 2027: Vietnam finished Group F with a 3-1 win over the Tigers on 31 March 2026. AFC had also recorded Malaysia's earlier home qualifiers against Nepal and Vietnam as 0-3 forfeits in its 17 March decision. The next target is qualification in a future cycle and a first knockout-stage appearance. A first World Cup appearance would be a historic breakthrough, not a return to a tournament Malaysia have previously played.
