Nigeria's trophy history

Nigeria's most recent AFCON title came in 2013, when a team without most of its biggest stars — several were left out or unavailable — beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final under coach Stephen Keshi, a former Nigeria captain who became one of the few men to win the tournament as both player and manager. That was Nigeria's third AFCON title, following wins in 1980 (as hosts) and 1994, when the 'Super Eagles' fielded a golden generation built around Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Rashidi Yekini, going on to reach the second round of the World Cup that same year and again in 1998. Despite that pedigree, Nigeria have never gone beyond the World Cup's round of 16, and their most recent AFCON final appearance, in 2023, ended in a narrow 2-1 loss to hosts Ivory Coast.
