The story

England won their only major trophy on home soil, beating West Germany 4-2 after extra time at Wembley Stadium. It remains the country's sole World Cup or continental title to date.

England's trophy history

England is the birthplace of modern football, having codified the rules of the game in 1863, yet the national team's honors list remains surprisingly short. Their only major trophy came on home soil in 1966, when a team built around West Ham's Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, plus Manchester United's Bobby Charlton, beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time at Wembley. Geoff Hurst's hat-trick in that final remains the only one ever scored in a World Cup final, a record that has now stood for nearly six decades. Since then, England have reached two more major finals — the delayed Euro 2020 final in 2021, lost to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley, and the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, lost 2-1 to Spain. Both defeats extended the wait rather than ending it, and both came against sides who would go on to further success: Spain won the 2026 World Cup two years later.

England's only major trophy is the 1966 FIFA World Cup, won on home soil against West Germany.

Have England ever won the European Championship?

No. England have reached two Euro finals — 2020 (played in 2021) and 2024 — and lost both.

When is England's next chance at a major trophy?

England co-host UEFA Euro 2028 alongside Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, giving them a home tournament for the first time since 1966.

Why hasn't England won more since 1966?

There's no single explanation — England have regularly reached quarterfinals and semifinals but have been eliminated by tighter margins (penalty shootouts, extra-time losses) more often than most major footballing nations.
