Moldova Trophy Drought: Can the Poland Comeback Become a Turning Point?

Moldova have never reached the European Championship or FIFA World Cup, yet their recent story contains more than a blank tournament record. In June 2023, Ion Nicolaescu scored twice as Moldova recovered from 2-0 down to beat Poland 3-2. The 3-2 Poland comeback showed Moldova's attacking ceiling

Poland led 2-0 in Chișinău on 20 June 2023 through Arkadiusz Milik and Robert Lewandowski. Moldova had won only one of their previous 43 World Cup and EURO qualifiers, and the match appeared to be following a familiar pattern. Instead, Nicolaescu scored twice after half-time and Vladislav Baboglo headed the winner.

UEFA described Poland as 148 ranking places above Moldova at the time. The comeback was therefore more than a routine home win. It showed that Moldova could remain emotionally stable after conceding, press a stronger opponent and turn momentum into goals rather than settle for a respectable defeat.

The wider EURO 2024 campaign gave the result context. Moldova also drew away to Poland, beat the Faroe Islands and took points from Albania. A 1-1 home draw with Albania on the penultimate matchday left Moldova with a chance of qualifying automatically, but Czechia won the decider 3-0 after Baboglo's second-half red card.

Nicolaescu gives Moldova a reference point in attack

Nicolaescu's two goals against Poland made him the face of Moldova's best recent qualifying night. UEFA's match information listed him on 18 senior international goals by late 2025, a significant return for a team that often operates with little possession and few clear chances.

A forward cannot solve the structure alone. Moldova are most dangerous when the first pass after a regain finds a midfielder facing forward and the striker receives support before the defence resets. Against Poland, the team attacked rebounds and second balls with conviction. In heavier defeats, Nicolaescu and the other forwards have been left too far from the rest of the side.

The national team also benefits when players gain experience across stronger European leagues. That exposure raises tempo and tactical understanding, but the collective distances remain decisive. The back line cannot retreat while the midfield presses, and the first attacker cannot chase three defenders without support.

Promotion to League C was progress; World Cup qualifying exposed the gap

Moldova topped Nations League Group D2 in 2024/25 and earned promotion. Home wins over Malta and Andorra created the platform, while Virgiliu Postolachi's stoppage-time goal away to Andorra secured first place. UEFA confirmed Moldova's move into League C for the 2026/27 edition.

The following World Cup campaign was much harsher. Moldova lost 5-0 at home to Norway in March 2025 and 11-1 in Oslo in September, where Erling Haaland scored five. The team also lost twice to Italy and Israel and took its only point in a 1-1 draw away to Estonia.

Those two cycles are not mutually exclusive. Nations League promotion showed Moldova could win a group against comparable opponents. World Cup qualifying showed the speed and physical quality required against Europe's elite. The development task is to preserve the confidence of the first result without ignoring the structural failures revealed by the second.

Defending deeper may reduce space behind the line, but a team that never escapes will still concede repeated attacks. Moldova need a compact midfield screen, clearer responsibility at the edge of the box and an outlet positioned to make opponents respect the counterattack.

League C survival now turns to November

Moldova lost 0-2 away to Slovakia on 26 September, drew 1-1 with the Faroe Islands on 29 September and beat Kazakhstan 2-1 on 2 October. Moldova then lost 0-4 at home to Slovakia on 6 October. Survival in League C is the minimum practical target after promotion. Slovakia's two wins over Moldova exposed the gap, while the Kazakhstan victory showed a route to points against a more closely matched opponent. Moldova need to collect home points and avoid allowing one difficult away game to destabilise the entire window.

The first two fixtures brought one point: a defeat in Slovakia and a home draw with the Faroe Islands. October added a win over Kazakhstan but ended with the heavy Slovakia loss. The November task is to rebuild defensive stability without losing the attacking intent that produced the Kazakhstan result.

The longer-term objective remains a first major finals appearance, most plausibly through a competitive EURO qualifying group or a Nations League-assisted play-off route. Moldova came close enough in 2023 to make that ambition credible. The next step is not another isolated miracle but a campaign in which the Poland level appears more than once.
