A debut nation still waiting for a title

Botswana have never won the Africa Cup of Nations and have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. Their best AFCON result is the group stage, reached in both 2012 and 2025.

The qualification itself remains one of the country's most important sporting achievements. It showed that Botswana could compete in African qualifying and make a major tournament from a position outside the continent's traditional powers.

2012: the Zebras reach the AFCON

Botswana qualified for the 2012 AFCON after finishing at the top of a difficult qualifying group. The team then faced Ghana, Guinea and Mali in the finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The Zebras struggled to turn their possession and energy into points, but their presence was historic. Players who had developed in Botswana's domestic system were suddenly facing some of Africa's strongest national teams in a televised continental tournament.

The qualifying campaign that built belief

Botswana's route to 2012 was built on organisation and defensive consistency. The team collected the results it needed against stronger opponents and reached the finals ahead of more established African nations.

The achievement changed how the Zebras were viewed. Botswana were no longer only a developing side; they were a team that could navigate a full qualifying campaign and earn a place among Africa's best.

The 2025 return ended a long absence

Botswana qualified for the 2025 AFCON after missing six consecutive editions, securing their place with a 1-1 draw away to Egypt. At the finals they lost 3-0 to Senegal, 1-0 to Benin and 3-0 to DR Congo: zero points, no goals scored and seven conceded. The return nevertheless showed that the 2012 debut was not an isolated qualification.

The next generation needs more tournament experience and greater attacking depth. Two qualifications now provide a foundation for the first knockout target.

What would be Botswana's first AFCON title?

Botswana have already qualified twice, in 2012 and 2025. The immediate goals are a third appearance, a first finals point and then a first knockout place.

From there, the Zebras need a knockout appearance. More youth development, stronger club pathways and regular high-level preparation can give Botswana the depth required to challenge Africa's established teams.

The first AFCON appearance created belief. The next generation must turn that belief into a result that lasts beyond the group stage.
