Azerbaijan lead their Nations League group after a narrow home win over Lithuania. Aykhan Abbasov’s side have one league match left in Vaduz, followed by a different test in Andorra: protect the competitive opportunity without confusing it with a major-finals breakthrough.

Where Azerbaijan stand now

The current situation

Azerbaijan’s autumn league story has moved from surviving a narrow margin to having something concrete to protect. The draw in Lithuania, the goalless home meeting with Liechtenstein and the 1–0 return win over Lithuania leave them on five points. It is a three-game unbeaten league run, not a claim that the entire international year has passed without defeat.

Abdulla Khaybullayev’s goal decided the October 4 game. The significance was bigger than the scoreline: Azerbaijan moved above Lithuania with one league match left. Yet being first now is not the same as having finished first. Liechtenstein still have two games to play, and Lithuania close their campaign at home to them.

November therefore asks two separate questions. Can Azerbaijan turn a favourable group position into first place in Vaduz? And can the later friendly in Andorra provide another useful performance without being mistaken for a second Nations League match? Results, selection and tactical interpretation need to remain separate parts of that answer.

Azerbaijan 1–0 Lithuania

Khaybullayev’s goal on 4 October brought the first win of this league campaign.

One league match remains

A win in Vaduz would put Azerbaijan beyond both rivals. The group is not already won.

A separate friendly

Andorra is an away international, but the result will not change the D2 table.

Our readingThe next useful step is not to chase a second goal with the whole team at once. Give the forward a nearby supporting angle, keep the wide receiver at a different height and retain a central recovery position. A narrow lead can be protected through the structure of possession as well as through defending the penalty area.

AFFA’s completed Lithuania report supplies the score, scorer and matchday group. Its upcoming calendar separates the league fixture from the friendly. LFV’s accreditation notice confirms the Vaduz venue and stadium-local kickoff. UEFA’s competition records and squad page provide a second check; a competition roster is not a fresh November call-up. Tactical judgments are TrophyDrought editorial analysis, not statements from the coaching staff.

From a home breakthrough to the final league step

Facts first · interpretation second

Azerbaijan's 2026 checkpoint

SEPTEMBER

A 1–1 away draw with Lithuania opened the league campaign. A point away was a start, not a completed qualification route.

OCTOBER

A goalless Liechtenstein draw was followed by a 1–0 Lithuania win. Two home clean sheets changed the group picture.

NOVEMBER

Liechtenstein away completes Azerbaijan’s league schedule. Andorra follows as a friendly, with its own purpose and selection decisions.

The checkpoints describe completed events. The result chart calculates from the published scores, not an editorial performance rating.

Azerbaijan can reach eight points with a win in Vaduz. Lithuania’s maximum is seven, so that result would secure first place. A draw or defeat leaves other results relevant to the finishing order. UEFA’s announced 2028/29 restructuring transfers all League D teams to League C, not only group winners. Winning D2 and that structural move are different matters; neither is a World Cup or European Championship title or a guaranteed EURO play-off place.

The home win changed the table without erasing the earlier goalless draw. Two clean sheets offer a defensive reference, but the only away league game finished level. The next question is whether Azerbaijan can create support around a forward pass without sacrificing the cover that a narrow scoreline needs. That is a football interpretation to test, not a rating calculated from the final score.

A lead, not a finished job.

A win in Vaduz would take Azerbaijan to eight points. Lithuania can reach only seven, so first place would be secured. A draw or defeat leaves the remaining group results relevant. The two games left in the group are Liechtenstein–Azerbaijan and Lithuania–Liechtenstein, not the later Andorra friendly.

All League D teams move to League C under UEFA’s announced three-league structure for 2028/29. This is not reserved for the group winners. D2 first place remains a separate competitive objective, and neither that finish nor the structural move is a World Cup or EURO title or a guaranteed EURO play-off place.

Vaduz decides the league finish. Andorra is a friendly.

Three questions that define the autumn

Editorial watchlist

Can the first forward pass become a combination?

Emreli offers a higher reference, but a pass to a forward is not automatically a chance. A nearby diagonal option can let him return the ball or release another runner. Support matters most when the opponent denies the space to turn.

Can width create a second action?

A wide receiver needs an inside connection as well as a player ahead. Toral Bayramov’s schematic position explains that relationship: a return pass can change the angle instead of forcing an early cross into a settled box. This is editorial analysis, not the coach’s announced plan.

How do Azerbaijan protect a narrow advantage?

Two home clean sheets are useful evidence, not a guarantee of another. If both supporting players move beyond the ball, a failed attack can become an immediate counter. Stagger the positions, leave a central recovery option and make the opponent play around the cover rather than straight through it.

Give Emreli a second option

Balayev starts the schematic route, Isayev offers a midfield connection and Emreli gives a higher reference. Khaybullayev stays in another lane. These six names come from the completed October 4 team, not a predicted November eleven.

The first pass needs an exit, not just a target.

AFFA credits him with the 25th-minute goal against Lithuania. A completed contribution is a factual reference, not a promise that the same player will decide the next game.

Selection and availability watch

Use the dated team as a reference

AFFA’s 4 October report names the starters and substitutes. Emreli started; Mahmudov was on the bench. The six schematic names come from that completed starting group, not a predicted November eleven.

Do not stretch an old health statement

Abbasov discussed the team’s condition after the Lithuania win. That October 4 statement is not a current medical clearance. Old substitutions and bookings are not converted into new injuries or continuing suspensions.

A competition roster is a different document

UEFA lists the league player pool and appearances. Neftçi’s 18 September notice confirms dated call-ups. A final November squad is not established by those documents; selection, fitness and eligibility need a fresh announcement.

Azerbaijan Now FAQs

Quick answers
When is Azerbaijan’s next match?

Azerbaijan visit Liechtenstein at Rheinpark Stadion in Vaduz on 13 November 2026. Kickoff is 20:45 CET locally, equivalent to 19:45 UTC and 23:45 in Baku, AZT/UTC+4.

Who do Azerbaijan play after Liechtenstein?

They visit Andorra on 16 November 2026 at Estadi de la FAF. AFFA’s current calendar lists a friendly at 22:00 Baku time, equivalent to 18:00 UTC and 19:00 CET in Andorra.

Is the Andorra match a Nations League game?

No. It is an international friendly. Azerbaijan’s remaining D2 league fixture is the November 13 visit to Liechtenstein; the friendly cannot change the group points.

What was Azerbaijan’s latest result?

Azerbaijan beat Lithuania 1-0 at home on 4 October 2026. AFFA credits Abdulla Khaybullayev with the 25th-minute goal.

Where are Azerbaijan in the Nations League group?

They lead D2 with five points from three games. Lithuania have four from three, and Liechtenstein have one from two. The table is calculated from four completed group matches.

What do Azerbaijan need to win their group?

A win in Vaduz would take them to eight points, beyond both rivals’ possible totals. A draw or defeat leaves other results relevant to the finishing order. First place is not already secured. UEFA’s announced transfer of every League D team to League C for 2028/29 is separate from winning this group.

Are Azerbaijan unbeaten in 2026?

Not across the whole year. They are unbeaten in the three completed games of this Nations League campaign: two draws and one win. That statement does not include the year’s friendlies.

Who is Azerbaijan’s current manager?

Aykhan Abbasov is the head coach listed by AFFA and UEFA. His October 4 post-match comments are treated as a dated report, not a new November squad announcement.

Has Azerbaijan confirmed a November squad?

A final November selection is not established in the checked sources. UEFA’s competition roster and the dated September call-ups do not by themselves confirm the next matchday squad.

Are Mahir Emreli and Emin Mahmudov available for November?

Emreli started the completed October 4 game, while Mahmudov was named among the substitutes. Those past team-sheet entries do not establish current fitness, November selection or a starting place.

Does the October coach report confirm everyone is fit now?

No. A health statement made after the October 4 game describes that time. Fresh fitness and disciplinary information is needed before treating it as a November all-clear.

How many European Championships have Azerbaijan won?

None. The senior men’s team have never reached the EURO finals. A League D group win or the home FIFA Series tournament is a different achievement.

Have Azerbaijan ever qualified for the World Cup?

No. The senior men’s team have not reached the World Cup finals, including the 2026 tournament.

Why are Azerbaijan in the Waiting Room despite the FIFA Series win?

This site tracks the senior men’s World Cup and top continental championship. The home FIFA Series tournament won in March 2026 was an invitational event outside that definition.

Is the tactical pitch Azerbaijan’s next starting line-up?

No. It uses six names from the completed October 4 starting group to explain passing support and recovery cover. It is not an official formation or a November selection announcement.
