Where Morocco stand now

September 2026 update

Morocco reached a second consecutive World Cup quarter-final after eliminating the Netherlands on penalties and Canada in the round of 16. France ended the run 2–0, but the larger conclusion is positive: 2022 was not an isolated peak.

AFCON qualifying now changes the game state. Morocco will often face deeper blocks and carry the responsibility to dictate possession. Gabon provide the first test before an away trip to Lesotho.

The standard held

A second straight quarter-final confirmed Morocco as a sustained tournament force.

Gabon in Rabat

The AFCON path starts at home against the strongest direct rival in Group A.

Turn control into chances

Morocco need repeatable answers against opponents who concede territory.

Our readingHakimi still gives Morocco an exceptional right-sided accelerator, but the most important development is inside him: Bouaddi, Ounahi and El Khannouss must create enough central threat that opponents cannot simply wait for the overlap.

The World Cup proved Morocco can survive elite knockout football. AFCON qualifying asks for a different skill: controlling favourites' matches without losing transition security.

Three questions that define the autumn

Editorial watchlist

Can Morocco dominate a low block?

The ball must travel through central pockets before Hakimi receives, otherwise attacks become predictable.

How quickly does the midfield renew?

Bouaddi and El Khannouss can add energy without discarding Ounahi's rhythm.

Can the back line defend higher?

Long spells of possession require brave distances and clean counterpressing.

Selected idea

Open the right lane late

Keep Hakimi outside the first circulation, then find him after the opposing winger has narrowed.

The final pass should release speed, not ask Hakimi to create it from a standing start.

Players who shape the next step

Roles, not a predicted XI
Right-side accelerator

Achraf Hakimi

Carries, overlaps and recovery speed change the geometry of the whole team.

Rhythm breaker

Azzedine Ounahi

His turns and disguised passes connect controlled possession to sudden penetration.

Next-cycle connector

Ayyoub Bouaddi

The young midfielder can give the team reach, pressure resistance and continuity.
