A founding nation.A new way forward.

Two narrow defeats, no group-stage goals and a Mozambique double-header ahead. Ethiopia’s next chapter is about making their possession count — and turning an old continental identity into a present-day qualification run.

29 September 2026 · Group J

CAF’s completed-round report records the draw. The Ethiopia finished the opening group window without a point. Ibrahim Mbaye scored the only goal after 11 minutes.

Where Ethiopia stand now

Current situation

Ethiopia were there at the beginning of AFCON, and the 1962 home title still gives the team a place in its history. The modern side has a different immediate target: reach the finals again after the 2021 edition, which was played in January 2022.

The opening Group J results were both 0–1 defeats, against Sudan and Senegal. Ethiopia have no points and no goals from those two matches, but only two goals conceded. The margin is narrow; the absence of a scoring response is the more persistent problem.

Mozambique come next, away and then at home during the November qualifying window. That gives the same opponent two chances to test Ethiopia’s build-up. The first pass after a recovery, the supporting angle around Kenean Markneh and the runner beyond the receiver matter more than a possession percentage alone.

Small scorelines, real pressure

Two 0–1 defeats leave Ethiopia on zero points. Four group games remain, so the campaign is difficult but not mathematically over.

Mozambique twice, two different tests

The federation’s programme has Mozambique hosting first, then travelling to Ethiopia. Exact days and kickoffs need a current confirmation.

Give the creative player a next pass

Receiving between the lines is only useful if another player stretches the defence and a midfielder stays available underneath.

Our readingThe board links six names on Ethiopia’s completed September match sheet. It illustrates a striker occupying the back line, wide support and a midfield platform. It is not Yohannes Sahle’s published November formation.

CAF’s completed-round reports anchor the scores and group totals. FIFA lists the current coach; Mozambique’s federation confirms the home-and-away order and November window. The September match sheet is a dated player reference, not a November squad announcement. Tactical judgments are TrophyDrought editorial analysis, not statements from the coaching staff.

These checkpoints count completed qualifying matches and goals, not invented performance scores.

A late concession against Sudan and an early concession against Senegal led to the same final score. The next question is whether Ethiopia can create a repeatable route to goal without leaving the midfield unprotected. These are editorial questions, not claims about private team instructions.

Zero points is a difficult opening, but the qualifying group is not complete. Ethiopia still have four matches, including both meetings with Mozambique. The next two games can change the gap without guaranteeing a finals place.

Mozambique scored four against Sudan; Senegal needed only one goal in Ethiopia. The same compact defence has to offer a route forward as well. Keeping the score close is useful only if the team can also build a scoring response.

Three questions for a more connected Ethiopia

Editorial watchlist

Can a narrow defeat become a scoring response?

Ethiopia conceded once in each opener but did not score in either. The next step is not simply to take more risk: it is to build another pass and another runner around the first attacking action.

Can Markneh receive facing the next action?

A creative player collecting the ball with his back to a packed midfield needs help. A wide outlet and a run beyond him can turn a good first touch into forward progress.

Can the midfield survive the turnover?

Mozambique scored four against Sudan. Ethiopia need support behind the attack so that an unsuccessful final pass does not immediately become a clear route toward their own box.

Panom provides a base, Markneh an inside connection and Gugsa an angled outlet. Yalew stays beyond the first pass, making space useful rather than simply occupied.

What the September record supports

The completed Senegal match sheet lists Abel Yalew, Chernet Gugsa, Biniam Fikru, Kenean Markneh, Habtamu Tekeste and Gathouch Panom. Those six names anchor the tactical board; the diagram’s arrangement is editorial analysis, not a published formation.

FIFA lists Yohannes Sahle as the men’s national coach. Some older association directories still show a previous coach, so an undated directory should not override a current team record.

What still needs the next announcement

The sources used here do not establish Ethiopia’s November call-up, injuries, medical clearance, suspension status or future captaincy. September involvement is not a guarantee of availability against Mozambique.

Ethiopia Now FAQs

Quick answers
When is Ethiopia’s next match?

Ethiopia next face Mozambique away in AFCON 2027 qualifying, followed by the return meeting at home. FMF places both matches in the 9–17 November 2026 window; exact dates and kickoffs are not verified here.

Why is there no exact kickoff countdown?

Secondary calendars disagree on the November match dates. A confirmed competition window does not establish an exact kickoff, so the page does not count down to an assumed time.

Who do Ethiopia play after Mozambique away?

Mozambique again, this time with Ethiopia as the home team. The federation’s programme confirms that home-and-away order. Exact stadium and kickoff details still require confirmation.

What was Ethiopia’s latest result?

Ethiopia lost 0–1 to Senegal on 29 September 2026. CAF reports that Ibrahim Mbaye scored the only goal after 11 minutes.

How did Ethiopia start AFCON qualifying Group J?

With two defeats: 0–1 against Sudan on 25 September and 0–1 against Senegal on 29 September. Ethiopia have zero points, no goals scored and two conceded from the two group matches.

Who is Ethiopia’s head coach?

Yohannes Sahle is listed as the men’s national coach by FIFA. The completed September match sheet also names Sahle; older directory entries should not be treated as current team news.

Has Ethiopia announced the November squad?

No November Ethiopia squad is established by the sources used on this page. September involvement does not guarantee a later call-up, medical clearance, captaincy or starting place.

Which players are used in the tactical explainer?

Abel Yalew, Chernet Gugsa, Biniam Fikru, Kenean Markneh, Habtamu Tekeste and Gathouch Panom are September match-sheet references. Their positions on the board explain relationships rather than an official November lineup.

Who are Ethiopia’s Group J opponents?

Senegal, Mozambique and Sudan. After two matches Senegal and Mozambique have four points each, Sudan have three and Ethiopia have none.

Can Ethiopia still qualify for AFCON 2027?

Yes, they are not mathematically eliminated after two matches. Four group fixtures remain, but qualification has not been secured. A better scoring response is an immediate need.

When did Ethiopia last play at AFCON?

At the 2021 edition, which was staged in Cameroon in January 2022. The 2013 return had ended a 31-year absence, but it was not their most recent finals appearance.

How many AFCON titles have Ethiopia won?

One: in 1962 as hosts, beating Egypt, then competing as the United Arab Republic, 4–2 after extra time in Addis Ababa.

Did Ethiopia host the first Africa Cup of Nations?

No. The inaugural tournament in 1957 was held in Sudan. Ethiopia took part and reached the final; they later hosted and won the 1962 edition.

Have Ethiopia ever qualified for the men’s World Cup?

No. Ethiopia have never reached the men’s FIFA World Cup finals, including the 2026 edition. A continental title and a World Cup finals appearance are different records.

Is the tactical board a predicted lineup?

No. It is an editorial explainer using dated player references. It does not establish the coach’s formation, player fitness, selection or availability for November.
