Where Algeria stand now

September 2026 update

Algeria's first World Cup appearance since 2014 ended in the opening knockout round. Switzerland won 2–0 and moved into the round of 16, but Algeria left with a meaningful platform: they had returned to the global stage and competed beyond the group phase.

The reset since then has been substantial. Vladimir Petkovic departed, Ibrahim Hamdani was appointed after leading Algeria's under-21 side to Mediterranean Games gold, and Riyad Mahrez and Aïssa Mandi ended their international careers. The team now has to replace both elite production and senior authority.

Hamdani's first 26-player squad keeps Ramy Bensebaini, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Nabil Bentaleb, Mohamed Amoura and Amine Gouiri, while Houssem Aouar and Hicham Boudaoui were omitted on technical grounds. Zambia at home and Burundi away offer an immediate test of whether the new hierarchy already makes sense.
