A response, not a reset. Now make it repeatable.

Two October wins restored some belief after a damaging September. Bryan Ruiz’s interim spell changed the immediate results, but the next test is different: take a more connected team to Ecuador and Argentina without mistaking a short response for a finished rebuild.

Latest result: Costa Rica 2–0 Haiti

Full time · 4 October 2026

Concacaf records Costa Rica’s second October win. The result brought their group total to six points, but Curaçao and Haiti took the quarter-final places. Read the completed-match report. The results filter separates the damaging September start from the October response.

Where Costa Rica stand now

Current situation

September supplied a warning that a three-goal lead was not the same as control. Costa Rica lost 3–4 to Curaçao, then 0–2 to Haiti. FCRF ended Fernando Batista’s tenure and appointed Ruiz as interim coach. The October response brought two wins, five goals and no concessions, but could not undo the earlier results or produce a Nations League quarter-final place.

The useful contrast is not simply old coach versus new coach. It is whether the team can keep enough passing options around the first receiver and enough cover behind an attack. The two October games offered a better outcome; the South American friendlies will ask whether those relationships survive stronger pressure and less comfortable spells without the ball.

FCRF announces Ecuador in Quito on 13 November and Argentina in Córdoba four days later. Exact stadiums and kickoffs remain unannounced in the notices used here. The competitive target beyond the friendlies is a Gold Cup place through the Prelims, not a November knockout tie that Costa Rica have already qualified to play.

The lead was not the platform

The 3–4 loss to Curaçao is the clearest reason not to judge an attack by its opening goals alone. The structure after losing the ball matters as much as the first forward move.

Two wins, five goals, two clean sheets

The wins over Nicaragua and Haiti were a meaningful response under interim coach Ruiz. Two games remain a small sample, not proof that every part of the team has been repaired.

Quito, then Córdoba

The confirmed dates create two demanding away assignments. Treat stadium and kickoff fields as pending, and keep the friendlies separate from the March Gold Cup qualification route.

Our readingThe full group sample finished 8–6 in goals and six points. October alone was 5–0; September was 3–6. Both views matter: the smaller sample shows the response, while the larger one preserves the cost of the earlier defeats. These are observed scores, not expected goals, possession figures or invented player ratings.

FCRF supports the interim appointment, dated October player lists and November programme. Concacaf supports the four results and qualification framework. The analysis below is editorial; no future medical clearance, permanent coaching contract or starting XI is inferred. Tactical judgments are TrophyDrought editorial analysis, not statements from the coaching staff.

Costa Rica do not need to recreate 2014 player for player. They need a new side able to stay connected when the first plan stops working. Supporting a winger’s next pass and protecting the centre after a turnover are more useful questions than demanding a new fairytale every window.

Three questions before November

Editorial watchlist

Can the winger receive with a second option nearby?

Mora can threaten a defender, but his next pass needs a clear destination. An inside receiver and Sinclair’s movement can give the ball carrier a choice before pressure arrives.

What changes when the first press is beaten?

If the first line chases without midfield cover, a promising attacking shape can become a direct route toward the defence. The distances between the lines are as important as the initial pressure.

Can the team keep its shape after taking the lead?

The Curaçao game makes that question concrete. Advancing more players is useful only if the cover and next receiving angles move with them rather than leaving everyone ahead of the ball.

Give Borges an angle beyond pressure

Players who shape the next step

Roles, not a predicted XI
Experience, with selection kept separate

Keylor Navas

FCRF included him in the 4 October match squad. The goalkeeper’s experience is an obvious reference point, but that list does not guarantee a November call-up or tell us who will start.

Width with an inside connection

Carlos Mora

Concacaf records two goals against Curaçao and another in Nicaragua. The analysis asks how to support his next action rather than treating an individual burst as a complete attacking system.

A forward reference

Orlando Sinclair

He scored in the opener and against Nicaragua, according to Concacaf, and appears in the October player list. His movement can create a return pass as well as a finishing option.

A dated squad, not a November promise

Selection and availability

Navas returned to the recent player pool

FCRF’s 4 October list includes Navas alongside Madriz and Sequeira. It also includes Mora, Sinclair, Alcocer, Borges, Soto and Calvo, the six references used in the illustrative tactical board. A match squad is not proof of who started, nor a future call-up.

Ruiz’s appointment was explicitly interim. A permanent contract or the identity of the November matchday coach requires its own federation confirmation.

Do not carry an old absence into a new camp

FCRF’s 30 September report says Galo left the camp with a right-knee meniscal injury and an expected recovery of at least two months. That is a dated estimate, not a fresh medical clearance or a new suspension.

Alcocer missed the Nicaragua trip with muscular discomfort but appears in the later Haiti list. His earlier absence therefore cannot be copied forward as a November exclusion. Check a fresh squad and current medical information.

Costa Rica Now FAQs

Quick answers
When is Costa Rica’s next match?

Costa Rica next face Ecuador in Quito on 13 November 2026. A visit to Argentina in Córdoba follows on 17 November. FCRF announces both dates and cities but leaves exact stadiums and kickoff times for a later notice.

What time is Ecuador v Costa Rica?

The kickoff is not specified in FCRF’s 16 October announcement. Quito is the announced city; do not convert a guessed local time into a countdown or treat a provisional listing as official.

When will Costa Rica play Argentina?

On 17 November 2026 in Córdoba, according to both FCRF and AFA. The official notices used here do not settle the exact stadium or kickoff. It is a friendly, not a World Cup qualifier or a Nations League quarter-final.

What was Costa Rica’s latest result?

Costa Rica beat Haiti 2–0 on 4 October 2026 at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Aymá. It followed a 3–0 win away to Nicaragua on 1 October.

Who coaches Costa Rica?

FCRF appointed Bryan Ruiz on an interim basis on 28 September after Fernando Batista’s departure. Ruiz led the completed October games. That announcement should not be rewritten as a confirmed permanent contract or a guaranteed November appointment.

How did Costa Rica finish the Nations League group stage?

The four matches produced six points: two wins, no draws and two defeats, with eight goals scored and six conceded. Curaçao and Haiti took the quarter-final places; Costa Rica did not advance to the last eight.

Are Costa Rica already qualified for the 2027 Gold Cup?

No direct finals place is established here. Their route is the March 2027 Gold Cup Prelims. Concacaf places League A’s third- and fourth-placed teams in that round; November’s South American friendlies do not award Gold Cup qualification points.

Will Keylor Navas play in November?

FCRF included Navas in the 23-player list for the completed Haiti match on 4 October, alongside Abraham Madriz and Patrick Sequeira. That confirms recent selection, not a November call-up or a guaranteed starting role.

Is Orlando Galo available?

FCRF’s 30 September report says a right-knee meniscal injury ended his participation in that camp and gave an expected recovery of at least two months. That dated estimate is not a new medical assessment or a confirmed November decision.

What happened to Josimar Alcocer?

FCRF reported muscular discomfort before the Nicaragua trip, but listed him for Haiti on 4 October. His earlier absence must not be carried forward as an automatic November exclusion.

Have Costa Rica announced their November squad?

The lists cited here belong to the completed September–October camp. A new call-up is needed before assigning November roles, injury clearance or a starting XI. Club form and a past selection alone do not confirm participation.

How many Gold Cups have Costa Rica won?

Zero under the Gold Cup name. They won its predecessor, the CONCACAF Championship, in 1963, 1969 and 1989. Those three continental titles are distinct from later Central American subregional trophies.

Did Costa Rica qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

No. Their most recent finals appearance remains 2022. The 2026 Nations League results are a different competition from the completed World Cup qualifying campaign.

What is Costa Rica’s best World Cup result?

The quarter-final in 2014. They topped a group with Uruguay, Italy and England, then beat Greece on penalties before losing a shootout to the Netherlands after 0–0 across 120 minutes.

Is the tactical board Costa Rica’s confirmed lineup?

No. Its six names come from FCRF’s completed October player pool. It explains possible passing relationships and cover, not an official formation, a recorded move or the next starting XI.

Where can I watch Costa Rica’s November matches?

Check the federations and authorised broadcasters in your territory nearer matchday. Earlier Nations League coverage does not confirm rights, ticket sales or kickoff arrangements for the two friendlies.
