The Republic of the Congo have one point after two qualifiers. Claude Le Roy’s return reconnects the team with its last AFCON finals run; the next task is to turn a promising spell into a result that changes Group G.

Latest result: Congo 1–1 Cameroon

Brazzaville · 29 September 2026

CAF’s completed-round report records the draw. The Republic of the Congo gained their first qualifying point; this was not a match played by DR Congo.

Where Congo stand now

Current situation

This is the Republic of the Congo, the Red Devils of Brazzaville, not DR Congo. The continental title in this team’s history is the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations. The immediate target is more modest and more urgent: qualify for the finals again after last appearing in 2015.

A 0–1 defeat by Namibia in Gaborone was followed by a 1–1 draw with Cameroon in Brazzaville. The completed two-game sample leaves Congo on one point, with one goal scored and two conceded. Four group matches remain; the position is difficult, not mathematically decided.

Le Roy’s return is a link with the 2015 quarter-final side, but nostalgia will not produce the next points. The useful question is whether Congo can keep a supporting pass available around their attacking players and protect the central lane after the ball is lost.

A point, and a route still open

Cameroon have four points; Comoros and Namibia have three; Congo have one. Two opening matches are not a completed qualifying campaign.

Comoros away comes next

CAF’s round-up and FECOFOOT’s fixture page list the next qualifier on 11 November. Exact kickoff and stadium are not assigned here.

Le Roy has been here before

The coach who led Congo at the 2015 finals is back. The present team still has to earn its own place at the next tournament.

Our readingA central midfielder should be able to find a player facing forward without abandoning the space behind the attack. When the receiver comes short, a second runner can keep the opponent deeper. The board uses six names documented in the September Namibia report to explain relationships, not an official November formation.

CAF completed-round reports and FECOFOOT’s fixtures anchor the results and next date. ACI’s first-hand reports support the coach appointment and dated player involvement. No November squad, fresh medical clearance or precise unconfirmed kickoff is invented. Tactical judgments are TrophyDrought editorial analysis, not statements from the coaching staff.

Congo's 2026 checkpoint

2 MATCHES

The opening AFCON qualifiers shown below, not every senior match in 2026.

1 POINT

A defeat by Namibia and a draw with Cameroon; four group games remain.

1–2

Goals scored and conceded in those two completed qualifiers.

These checkpoints count completed qualifying matches and goals, not invented performance scores.

The Namibia match and the Cameroon draw suggest two different problems to explore. Can Congo create a clearer next pass when the game is level? Can they manage possession after taking the lead without making their forward outlet disappear? These are editorial questions rather than claims about private coaching instructions.

Group G: the route is still on the table

Calculated from four completed group matches
Provisional order follows CAF’s published round-up. Comoros and Namibia are level on three points; Comoros won their direct meeting. Do not re-sort these two only by overall goal difference.

One point is a poor start, but four matches remain. Congo are two points behind each team currently on three, and the next opponent is Comoros. A win changes the discussion; a qualification place is not earned merely by being close to one.

The table and the goal chart answer different questions. The chart shows Congo’s two performances; the table includes the other two group results as well. Neither is a prediction of the final order.

Three questions for a more connected Congo

Editorial watchlist

Can the attack keep a second option?

A runner beside the first receiver can make a good pass useful. If everyone heads toward the ball, Congo lose both depth and the angle for the next action.

Can a lead become control?

Congo led Cameroon before the equaliser. The question is not simply whether to defend deeper: the side still needs an outlet that lets the midfield breathe.

Can the same habits survive the away game?

A compact midfield only helps if it can turn a recovery into a controlled pass. Comoros away will test whether those distances hold outside Brazzaville.

Give the receiver a return and a forward pass

Massanga illustrates the base, Makouta the inside connection and Ikia Dimi the angled outlet. Bantsiele stays beyond the first pass instead of coming into the same space.

Different distances give the player on the ball a choice.
